Hello, I’m Matthew Seward. I’ve been in the creative game for 40 years, and I’ve worked with just about every type of media you can think of.
My career began in print was king, when layouts were pasted up by hand with typesetting and half-tones. No computers, no shortcuts. When desktop publishing came along, I was lucky enough to be right there at the beginning, learning PageMaker, Quark, Photoshop, Freehand, and Illustrator, all as they hit the market. From there, I moved into video, audio, web, animation… you name it. As each medium became accessible to those willing to learn, I jumped in head first and added it to my repertoire.
But all that experience isn’t just about knowing how to create in different formats. It’s about understanding how they work together. Because I’ve worked in every medium, I know how to orchestrate them, like a conductor who can play every instrument. It’s not just about making things. It’s about bringing them together in a way that creates a symphonic user experience.
Running my own creative business for 20+ years gave me a whole other level of understanding, managing production, sales, marketing, and budgets. I learned firsthand that creative decisions aren’t just about looking cool or being trendy. They have to make sense and move the needle for a business.
Then there’s teaching. I spent over a decade leading design classes at the college level. Teaching wasn’t just about showing students how to make things look good; it was about coaching them through the creative process and showing them how to collaborate and think strategically.
What makes me a great creative director isn’t just that I know how to produce all kinds of media. And it’s not because I understand the business end where the difficult decisions are made. It’s that I know how to guide and mentor creative teams so everything works together and delivers results. I know how to turn ideas into campaigns that actually make an impact.
I don’t just solve problems. I create solutions.
