Design Process: 101

Mastering the Art and Science of Creative Problem-Solving

Design Process

Welcome to my series on Design Process, where we embark on a journey through the fundamental stages of crafting exceptional designs.

As a former professor at Mt. Sierra College, I had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative power of a comprehensive design philosophy. We didn’t just teach design techniques and software; we instilled in our students a holistic understanding of Design Process—a philosophy that guided every aspect of our design programs campus-wide.

Through hands-on projects, collaborative workshops, and real-world experiences, we cultivated a community of designers who embraced creativity, empathy, and adaptability as core principles.

Now, I’m excited to share insights from my experience and expertise, guiding you through the Five Ds of Design; Define, Discover, Design, Develop, and Deliver. Join me as we uncover the secrets to crafting design excellence, one step at a time.

Welcome to my series on the Design Process, where we embark on a journey through the fundamental stages of crafting exceptional designs. Whether you're a seasoned designer or just stepping into the realm of creativity, understanding the significance of a structured design process can be transformative.
In the world of design, clarity is key. Before we embark on any creative endeavor, we must first define what success looks like. This is where the Define phase comes into play—a foundational step that sets the stage for everything that follows.
Design is inherently about problem-solving. To effectively solve a problem, we must first understand it from every angle possible. This includes examining how others have tackled similar problems in the past and learning from their successes and failures.
Design is both an art and a science—a delicate balance of creativity and logic, intuition and analysis. In the Design phase, we harness this duality to craft solutions that not only meet user needs but also delight and inspire.
The Develop phase is where the magic happens. This is where we roll up our sleeves and transform our design concepts into functional prototypes and products. But this process is more than just execution—it's a collaborative effort that requires careful planning, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence.
The Deliver phase is where our hard work pays off. After months of ideation, iteration, and development, we're finally ready to share our designs with the world. But before we do, there are several crucial steps we must take to ensure a successful launch.
